Dr. McCain, winner of the Pancreas Foundation Nobility in Science Award, has seen many pancreatic tumors and his practice. With his experience and expertise in this specialty small tumors of the ampulla are removed via a transduodenal approach while tumors of the head of the pancreas are resected using the Whipple procedure. We have recently seen a significant increase in solid and cystic tumors of the mid body and distal pancreas requiring less extensive resections for removal. Laparoscopy or robotic resection with intra-operative ultrasound is used to detect advanced disease at the start of each operation
Careful follow-up and medical oncology radiation oncology evaluation for pre or post operative treatment of pancreatic tumors is of great importance due to the high rate of recurrence / metastases of these tumors. There are multiple open clinical trials for this disease available
